Greetings,Harlesses! When my family and I were visiting in Washington, D.C., we
visited Mt. Vernon, Geo. Washington's homesite. There we saw firsthand a replica
of his 16-sided "barn," his invention of an inside threshing floor.
Gathered wheat would be thrown on the floorboards meticulously placed about an
1/8th to 3/16 inches apart. Horses would walk around the "round" barn,
automatically threshing the wheat, causing the kernals to fall through the
floorboards to a cellar below where the wheat was gathered. The chaff remained
upstairs, trampled underfoot. It must have been a rather violent process for the
wheat kernals, but when they "weathered" the threshing, they were
